The Great Wave

Year 4 have created artworks in the style of Hokusai's "The Great Wave."
The students drew the wave with black markers, then used blue watercolour paints (Cool colours) to the water.

Next the students painted their sky, mountain and any boats using orange and brown watercolours (warm colours).
Finally, Year 4 used white acrylic paint to paint foam and sea spray.
As a challenge activity when finished, some students signed their name in Japanese in the top left corner.
They look absolutely fantastic! Well done Year 4!

Notan

Nōtan 濃淡 is a Japanese style of art where light and dark are side by side.
The artwork must be balanced, which means that black and white are used equally. The artworks are always symmetrical.

Manga Action Heroes

Year 4 looked closely at Manga (a form of Japanese animation) before designing their self-portraits as a Manga Action Hero. To research Manga, we watched some classic TV clips such as Sailor Moon, Astro Boy, Dragon Ball Z, Pokemon and my personal favourite, Samurai Pizza Cats!
Students had to think about what powers/skills they might have and practise drawing Manga characters in different action stances as well as imitate the unique way Japanese Manga artists draw hair and facial features. The students really enjoyed doing this project and the results were very successful. It was a nice end to our Japanese Program.
Do you recognise any of these superheroes from the playground?

Koi fish Kites

Year 4 are making artworks with the theme 'Japan.'

It just so happened that I came across these fantastic Koi Fish kites.

To decorate them, you only need to follow 2 VERY easy steps.
Step 1 - draw patterns and designs with textas. Symmetrical or non-symmetrical patterns.
Step 2 - Add water using a paint brush.
That's it!

What you end up with is an amazing tie-dye effect. This will only work on non-permanent textas as they will run when wet.
It has created a lot of art-envy for the other grades who see the kites drying in the art room.
To finish the kites, we punched holes in the mouth and added string.
This is possibly one of my favourite art activities!
Can you spot some hanging in the art room?
