The Great Wave

Year 4 have created artworks in the style of Hokusai's "The Great Wave."
The students drew the wave with black markers, then used blue watercolour paints (Cool colours) to the water.

Next the students painted their sky, mountain and any boats using orange and brown watercolours (warm colours).
Finally, Year 4 used white acrylic paint to paint foam and sea spray.
As a challenge activity when finished, some students signed their name in Japanese in the top left corner.
They look absolutely fantastic! Well done Year 4!

Nōtan 濃淡 is a Japanese style of art where light and dark are side by side.
The artwork must be balanced, which means that black and white are used equally. The artworks are always symmetrical.

Trees

Year 3 and 4 used masking tape to create Australian Gum Trees. Students used pastels and watercolour paints to add details. The focus was on the trunks rather than the leaves to give the illusion that you were walking through the national park.

Lesson 1
1. Rip pieces of masking tape - stick on art shirt for safe keeping and to lose stickiness.
2. Place tape on art paper, starting from the top. Leave space at the bottom.
3. Add smaller pieces of tape to create branches.
4. Outline with black pastel, add shadows, add horizon.

 Lesson 2

1. Paint sky using water colours. Must blend a minimum of 3 colours together to create the look of a sunrise, sunset or bushfire.
2. Paint foreground /add any other details.
3. Allow to dry.

Lesson 3
1. CAREFULLY peel off tape, reveling gum trees underneath.
2. Smudge finger along one side of tree, dragging pastel in to create a 3D look.
3. Add lines and knots to look like tree trunks.

They look great! Well done Year 4!

Manga Action Heroes

Year 4 looked closely at Manga (a form of Japanese animation) before designing their self-portraits as a Manga Action Hero. To research Manga, we watched some classic TV clips such as Sailor Moon, Astro Boy, Dragon Ball Z, Pokemon and my personal favourite, Samurai Pizza Cats!
Students had to think about what powers/skills they might have and practise drawing Manga characters in different action stances as well as imitate the unique way Japanese Manga artists draw hair and facial features. The students really enjoyed doing this project and the results were very successful. It was a nice end to our Japanese Program.
Do you recognise any of these superheroes from the playground?
